DISCIPLINE PLAN
Educators and parents agree: schools need discipline. That's why the staff at Albion Elementary School support a school discipline policy which is consistent and fair. When there are no rules, people do not know what is expected of them. Students should follow rules in school so that:
Our ten (10) school-wide rules are listed below:
1. Listen to and follow directions of all persons in authority.
PURPOSE OF RULE: To keep order in the classroom and building.
EXAMPLE OF MISBEHAVIOR: Not following instructions by the teacher, principal, custodians, secretary or other adults related to the school.
2. Use of swearing, profanity, or obscene gestures is prohibited.
PURPOSE OF RULE: To prevent offending others.
EXAMPLE OF MISBEHAVIOR: Curse words, profane sayings, and inappropriate gestures.
3. Be considerate, courteous and respectful of everyone.
PURPOSE OF RULE: To give everyone a chance to express themselves without interruption.
EXAMPLE OF MISBEHAVIOR: Talking out of turn, name calling, using impolite gestures or language.
4. Be in attendance, prepared to work and in you assigned seat on time.
PURPOSE OF RULE: to foster student responsibility and to insure the class begins without unnecessary delay.
EXAMPLE OF MISBEHAVIOR: Being absent or tardy to class. Students will be considered tardy if they as not in their assigned seat before the bell rings.
5. Respect school and personal property of others.
PURPOSE OF RULE: To prevent damage, loss or theft of school or student property.
EXAMPLE OF MISBEHAVIOR: Writing on or scratching desks, lockers, bulletin boards, walls, or fixtures. Taking things without asking to borrow or use them.
6. Keep hands, feet and object to yourself.
PURPOSE OF RULE: To keep students from hurting each other.
EXAMPLE OF MISBEHAVIOR: Hitting, kicking, tripping, throwing things or public displays of affection.
(Intentionally hurting another student or staff member will result in immediate suspension.)
7. Walk orderly when going anywhere in the building.
PURPOSE OF RULE: To keep hallways orderly when students are in the hallways.
EXAMPLE OF MISBEHAVIOR: Running, yelling, pushing, shoving, or congregating.
8. Learn to follow all rules that apply to special areas; ie: the cafeteria, the playground, the school bus and your teacher's classroom rules.
PURPOSE OF RULE: To allow teachers to create the best and safest learning environment possible.
9. There is no gum chewing at school, or wearing of hats in the building.
10. Absolutely no radios or battery operated toys of any kind will be brought to school without the principal's permission.
CONSEQUENCES
For minor offenses such as breaking recess rules, failing to line up when asked, etc., the following consequences will be the result in sequential order unless the teacher deems it necessary to move to a more severe consequence.
1. One warning by the teacher.
2. Standing against the walk (at recess).
3. A twenty minute recess detention (served inside).
4. After school detention (30 minutes for first, second, and third grade) and (45 minutes for fourth, fifth and sixth graders).
5. The student will be sent to the principal for a major consequence.
(24 hour notice will be given for all after-school detentions)
For MAJOR offenses such as skipping detention, fighting, using vulgar language, being sent out of the class to the principal's office, etc., the following consequences will be given:
1. At least two after-school detentions.
2. In-house suspension.
3. Out-of-school suspension.
(Multiple offenses of the same kind will result in the more serious consequence.)
The following SERIOUS offenses will result in automatic in-house or out-of-house suspension:
1. Swearing.
2. Smoking.
3. Stealing.
4. Possession of or use of any kind of fireworks at school.
5. Possession of a weapon of any kind at school.
6. Possession or use of alcohol or drugs at school.
7. Threats or intimidation.
8. Intentionally hurting staff or other students.
School Board policy states: “Students shall be responsible for any school work missed during their suspension. After reinstatement and upon request, they shall be permitted to take any tests, quizzes or any other form of evaluation affecting their grades.”
