Ms. Markowski

We have had a good start to the year.  Second graders are getting used to our classroom routines.  We have been working on many skills daily or at least several times a week.   These skills include penmanship, spelling, phonics, word problems, place value, reading together or shared reading, writing on charts together or interactive writing, math books and writing folders where children write individual stories.

We have been working on a Mercer Mayer unit that has been a lot of fun.  We have read many books by  Mercer and even Gina Mayer and have done projects to go along with these books

In science, we have been studying about the solar system.  We have learned that the sun is the center of our solar system, that the earth rotates as it  revolves around the sun, that the earth takes 24 hours to rotate once and 365 days to revolve around the sun.  We have pretended to be earth and have practiced rotating and revolving around our desks (the sun).

In social studies, we have learned about our community and the goods and services offered in it.  We are also learning the difference between wants and needs.

In math, we are reviewing basic addition and subtraction, fact families, place value, word problems, patterns, 3D shapes and graphing.

Our class enjoyed going with the whole school to Lakewood Theater to see Cinderella..

Please ask your child to tell you about anything we have done or learned.
