Dear Staff, Students, and Families,
I am writing to inform you of one positive case of COVID-19 at Benton Elementary School and one positive case at Lawrence High School that has resulted in twenty-nine students and twelve staff members identified as close contacts at Benton Elementary, and sixteen students and two staff members identified as close contacts at Lawrence High School. School nurses were in contact with the Maine DOE, and I have notified the Maine CDC. School staff are notifying those individuals involved. We are informing the school community for your awareness, and to clarify information we have at this time for those associated with Benton Elementary School and Lawrence High School.
I thank our staff who are working hard to support a safe and healthy school environment, particularly our school nurses as positive COVID cases develop. I am appreciative of families' understanding when they do receive a close contact notification call for we understand that this news likely creates a challenging circumstance. I also thank families who carefully monitor health at home and make those daily decisions—your vigilance is greatly appreciated.
As I was reminded today by a CDC epidemiologist, these cases are a result of community spread. Please continue to monitor for symptoms of COVID-19, call a health care provider if symptoms start, and stay home if you are sick. At this time, we are able to adequately staff the schools and continue to sustain all the safety measures in place to support open school buildings. Thank you for your support of our students.
Stay safe and be well.
Superintendent of Schools
