COVID-19 Update February 9, 2021

February 9, 2021

Dear Staff, Students, and Families,

I am writing to inform you of two positive cases of COVID-19 at Benton Elementary School, with no close contacts identified, and one positive case of COVID-19 at Lawrence Junior High School, with eight staff members and twenty-seven students identified as close contacts.   The Maine DOE school nurse consultant contact has been notified, and as well as an epidemiologist from the Maine CDC. School staff are notifying those individuals of their need to quarantine.  Prior to this report of a COVID-positive case, a number of staff were not able to report to work due to a variety of other circumstances, in addition to the eight staff members identified as close contacts.  Therefore, out of great caution and concern for the school’s ability to operate without a number of staff, we are closing the junior high building through Friday, February 12. Students should plan to transition to fully remote learning—Principal Boynton will communicate those details later today. We will complete a thorough environmental cleaning of the facility and school will reopen following Winter Break on Monday, February 22 when the school will be more fully staffed.

We are notifying the community in an effort to keep those associated with Benton Elementary and Lawrence Junior High informed and to clarify the information we have at this time.  Please continue to monitor for signs and symptoms of COVID-19, call a health care provider if symptoms start, and stay home if you are sick.

Thank you for your understanding in this very challenging environment for students, their families, and our staff.

Stay safe and be well.

Roberta Hersom

Superintendent of Schools
