Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)
Dr. Reza Namin
Thursday, June 27, 2019

Dear MSAD#49 Community,

It’s time to start planning for summer. Just as learning does not end when school lets out, the need for good nutrition also continues to be a priority in the summer months. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) was created to ensure that children in low-income areas continue to receive nutritious meals during long school vacations, when they do not have access to school lunch or breakfast. A few of the benefits that come from participating in the Summer Food Service Program include:

  • Improved retention of learning;
  • Providing nutritious meals to children and improving their health and well-being;
  • Increasing participation in summer education and youth recreation programs;
  • Employing school staff or other community members during the summer when they might otherwise not be working.

Student Nutrition Continues Beyond School Year with Summer Food Service Program

With the assistance of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Maine public schools have long offered a nutritious breakfast and lunch meal program to thousands of children in Maine during the school year. MSAD#49 participates in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP):
