COVID-19 Update

6:00 PM

March 13, 2020

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students and Staff,

MSAD 49 is taking the following precautionary steps out of concern for the wellbeing of our students, staff and families.  In our efforts to protect our school community from the possible spread of COVID-19, we are making the following procedural changes. Minimizing use of school facilities by the public and intensifying cleaning regimens are essential to the continued operation of district schools. As a result, the following guidelines will be in place effective Monday, March 16, 2020 through the foreseeable future. We will continue to monitor this quickly evolving situation and make adjustments as necessary.

  • All student field trips to out of school facilities are canceled.
  • There will be no school assemblies or large group use of District buildings.
  • All travel for the District by employees will be limited and must be approved in advance.
  • District facilities will no longer be available to outside groups until further notice.
  • All extra-curricular and co-curricular activities are cancelled for the foreseeable future.
  • The Maine Principals Association is delaying the start of Spring athletics until Monday, April 27.
  • All booster and PTO activities (including meetings) at schools are canceled.
  • Involvement of school volunteers is postponed for the foreseeable future.
  • All non-essential meetings are canceled.
  • As much as possible, all essential meetings will be done online or by telephone.
  • The MSAD 49 School Board will continue to meet as scheduled with public attendance.  The meetings will continue to be recorded and posted on the District site.
  • The custodial staff will place a heavy emphasis on sanitizing high-touch areas on a daily basis.
  • All school facilities will close every day at 5:00 PM (with the exception of Childcare) and will not be open on weekends—"closed" applies to everyone including all staff except essential personnel to allow for cleaning and disinfecting.

The agenda for our March 20 Early Release Inservice is dedicated to preparation for the potential of school closing and our ability to support student learning—learning resources will come from a variety of sources, and may be available in a variety of formats for students and families. The Maine Curriculum Leaders Association is also providing assistance.

Additionally, we are developing a Student Nutrition contingency plan in the event of school closures. The model may be similar to our Summer Meal Program—we will update our families with our plan should the need arise.

We recognize these restrictions may cause an inconvenience.  However, our decisions are based on current guidance from the State of Maine, and with the best interests of our school community at heart.

Thank you.

Roberta Hersom
