2021-2022 Immunizations Requirements

Re: Immunizations Requirements for the 2021-2022 School Year

Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,

This notice is to inform you of a new law that will take effect on September 1, 2021 that removes both philosophical exemptions and religious exemptions from the exceptions to immunization requirements.

A student covered by an individualized education plan (IEP) on September 1, 2021 who elected a philosophical or religious exemption from immunization requirements on or before September 1, 2021 pursuant to the law in effect prior to that date may continue to attend school under that student's existing exemption as long as the parent or guardian of the student provides a statement from a licensed physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant that the physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant has consulted with that parent or guardian and has made that parent or guardian aware of the risks and benefits associated with the choice to immunize.

The law around immunizations required for school enrollment goes into effect on Sept. 1 of this year gives parents a 90-day window to have their child immunized, if they provide written assurance that the child will be immunized in that time period. Students enrolled in grades PreK through 12 are to be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, polio and varicella. Additionally, all students enrolled in grades 7-12 must be immunized against meningococcal disease. Without vaccinations or written assurance a child will not be allowed to enroll in school.

Since it takes time to complete immunization series, this is the time to call your child’s primary care provider to set up a schedule to start receiving vaccines if your child is going to be able to attend the first day of school this fall. Your school nurse can let you know what immunizations they are missing for school compliance.

Thank you for your attention to this issue. We hope to see your child(ren) in school for the upcoming 21-22 school year.

Sincerely,

Patricia J. Watts
