Dear Families, Students and Staff,

With the passage of LD 153 (An Act to Strengthen Testing for Lead in School Drinking Water), the Maine Legislature has mandated that all K-12 schools in Maine test their drinking water for the presence of lead. The Drinking Water Program has been charged with coordinating the effort, which began in October 2021.

Our schools’ drinking water was recently tested, and the preliminary results are coming in, with reports this afternoon for Fairfield Primary and Albion Elementary.  These results will be posted on our district website, as well as the mitigation and remediation steps if needed.  While Fairfield Primary’s results do not indicate any action needed, Albion’s results indicate that some fixtures need to be addressed, initially by instituting Temporary Control Measures that involve preventing water consumption until the plumbing/fixture can be replaced. These measures include • Shut Off Fixtures • Install Do-Not-Drink Signs • Provide Bottled Water.

The safety of our students and staff is of the highest priority. Facilities Maintenance personnel will be in the building before students and staff arrive to put the temporary control measures in place (shut off affected fixtures, post do-not-drink signs, and provide bottled water) and begin to collect investigatory samples. I will keep you informed as the information is made available to us. Please see our website tomorrow for further information. You may also wish to visit the Maine CDC for more resources.

Thank you.
