At Benton Elementary, Rachel Carpenter’s sixth graders are participating in weekly “Teamwork Tuesday” activities to practice working together as effective teams. Recently students worked in small groups to discover things they have in common with one other, recording each on separate index cards. Next each team used their collections of cards, along with their engineering skills, to see who could build the tallest tower. Teammates collaborated, got creative, and had loads of fun, all while strengthening the bonds of their classroom community.

The high school LEAP field trip to Fort Popham and the beach on September 8th provided great discussions, new adventure and new knowledge. The students had been given assignments for Humanities and STEAM. The Humanities assignment was a choice between:
Writing a one page summary on the historical significance and context for Fort Popham.

Reflections of the trip. What did you see? smell? feel? observe?
The STEAM assignment was to read through the printed article: The Gulf of Maine Warming Update: Spring 2023. After reading the article and experiencing Maine's coast the students were asked to list 5 important pieces of information and 5 questions they have regarding the document.
Spotlight is on the girls’ cross country team this week, pictured here at a recent meet. The Cross Country Team, under the Coaching of Eric Brown, has partnered with KVCC to build and host home meets on the KVCC campus. The girls won their first meet that they hosted! Congratulations to them and a thank you to KVCC for partnering with us to provide a different home course.

It’s harvest time for Benton Elementary’s Garden Club! Librarian Amanda Delorie has gathered vegetables and prepared several tasty treats for students, including beets, tomatoes, peppers, peas, green beans, and eggplant. This week fifth graders enjoyed Mrs. Delorie’s homemade pesto, made with fresh basil from the school’s garden. Yum!

Kellie Paisley-Hopper is joining our Benton staff as our new assistant principal. Mrs. Hopper began her teaching career at Benton Elementary in 1997, and has taught fifth and sixth grade for the past 26 years. She is delighted to be stepping into this new leadership role, and is excited to be working alongside the staff and students of Benton during the 23-24 school year.
