Sixth grade students at Lawrence Elementary have been learning about bridge engineering and design. Mark Hume, an engineer for the Maine Department of Transportation, recently visited with students to teach them about the various types of bridges, their parts, and design principles. This week and next week our sixth graders are touring bridges throughout the central Maine area, sketching their observations and gathering ideas for their own designs. Teams of students will be using what they've learned to design and build their own toothpick bridges, then test their models for strength.
